What is Stand Out?

Stand Out is a safe space where young LGBT men and women can be proud of themselves and feel empowered to achieve their ambitions. We are a place where LGBT youth can share their joys and concerns surrounded by peers and adults who support them. Through our weekly meetings, our outreach in the community and other special events, Stand Out is Savannah's voice for the young, gay and proud.

Why Are We Here?
For too many LGBT young people, hatred, fear and isolation are a part of everyday life. Especially in Savannah, they face a mine field of contradictions. Cable and satellite beam some gay-positive programming into their bedrooms. But outside, among family, peers and the rest of society, they're confronted with a different reality, one that often leads to harassment, depression and a host of negative outcomes. It doesn't have to be this way. Surrounded by accepting peers, frankly discussing sensitive issues, Savannah's gay youth can defy statistics.

What Does Stand Out Do?

Stand Out provides a weekly meeting space for young gay men and women to talk about the things that are relevant and important in their lives, things like, coming out, relationships, family, religion and sex. Once a month, there's a movie and pizza night. Guest speakers are brought in to give their stories and perspectives. And occasionally, we'll gather for special events in theater, art, poetry and music. Our adult volunteers keep the whole thing going through community outreach, fundraising, specialized training and other activities designed to remember the youth.

Where Did We Come From?

Savannah's LGBT community service organization, First City Network, established a monthly LGBT youth support group in 1994. In 2002, FCN recognized the need for greater service toward LGBT youth and re-styled the program as Stand Out, with structured, youth-led, weekly meetings and more adult volunteers. With a 24-hour phone line established, grants received and the word spreading, by 2004, the number of young people we serve increased dramatically. In 2005, Stand Out incorporated as Stand Out Youth, Inc.

How Can I Get Involved?
If you're a young person, between the ages of 14 and 23, just showing up can be half the battle. Heck, just calling our phone number to find out where to meet is sometimes difficult. Please feel welcome to do so whenever you' re ready. If you're an adult wishing to volunteer, call the number and find out what opportunities and requirements we have.
