Stand Out Youth Update!
By Jessica Cohen – Board Member and Youth Committee Chair
Movies, live music, open discussion, oh my! Stand Out Youth has had a great start this year with many new additions to both volunteers and youth, as well as, a lot of exciting events going on. As you may remember, we started off the year by bringing the movie For the Bible Tells Me So and an amazing panel for discussion to the Victory Drive Theaters. Thank you for all of your support and encouragement in this endeavor. The youth really appreciated the turn out and the feedback thus far has been great.
After the movie we have had a lot go on at the FCN building on Friday nights. We’ve had our first topic night which coveredtwo of our Fridays, starting off with a discussion on homophobia; it is so encouraging to see young people speak so openly and candidly about a topic I personally still struggle with when I bring it to my grandparents’ dinner table. Then again, I think SOY gives so much more to the youth than any dinner table can, and that’s a safety net for an open discussion on homosexuality in this day. We have had game and movie nights in and moved a meeting to the Sentient Bean to watch musicians play. We also have in the wings a couple of different speakers from valuable organizations to increase knowledge. The next month and a half will be particularly exciting. On March 28th we will have a BBQ at Bob and Todd’s house, on April 4th we will take part in the SCAD gallery hop, and on April 11th we will be hosting an open mic night and open house at the FCN building.
I will also be encouraging all of the youth to take part in any of the appropriate PRIDE and FCN activities coming up. Lastly for new things coming, SOY will begin to host meetings on the first Saturday of every month for our younger youth, ages 14-17 from 2-4pm. Keep an ear out for more information if you know of a youth who would benefit from this group; the first meeting is on April 4th. Stand Out Youth would like to personally invite each and every one of you to our open mic night on April 11th at 7 pm at 307 E. Harris. There are some very talented artists in SOY and we would like to show you who they are and give you a little taste of the amazing people who are a part of this group. So please come and support the youth as you have done in the past by being an encouraging and positive presence in their lives.
And speaking of support, if you are interested in volunteering for SOY, please feel free to call or email us! Most recently we have trained 5 new volunteers who are able to facilitate and take part in all of our upcoming activities. I think it is going to be a great year and I look forward to being a part of it. I hope to see you all on April 11th and at future
events.
