Stand Out Youth, Inc. was established to foster support and promote understanding of issues facing gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or youth questioning their sexual orientation, identity as queer and our straight allies.
We are dedicated to building a gay-positive community and instilling pride and confidence in young people through empowerment.
What Is Stand Out?
Stand Out is a safe place where young LGBTQ guys and girls can be proud of themselves and feel empowered to achieve their ambitions. We are a place where LGBTQ youth can share their joys and concerns surrounded by peers and adults who support them. Through our weekly meetings, our outreach in the community and other special events, Stand Out provides a voice for the young, gay and proud.
Why Are We Here
For too many LGBTQ young people, hatred, fear and isolation are a part of everyday life. They face a mine field of contradictions. Cable and satellite beam some gay-positive programming into their homes, but outside, among family, peers and the rest of society, they’re confronted with a different reality, one that often leads to harassment, depression and a host of negative outcomes. It doesn’t have to be this way. Surrounded by accepting peers and frankly discussing sensitive issues, Savannah’s gay youth can defy statistics.
Where Did SOY Come From?
Savannah’s LGBTQ community service organization, First City Network, established a monthly LGBTQ youth support group in 1994. In 2002, FCN recognized the need for greater service toward LGBTQ youth and re-styled the program as Stand Out, with structured, youth-led, weekly meetings and more adult volunteers. With a 24-hour phone line established, grants received and the word spreading, by 2004, the number of young people we serve increased dramatically. In 2005, Stand Out incorporated as Stand Out Youth, Inc.
