Finding support is half the battle!
With the rewards also come the challenges of being a parent. One of the most challenging things parents and families may face is dealing with the issues of sexuality and/or gender identity, and not always knowing how to best help. Knowing of resources is half the battle to moving in a supportive and positive direction.
It has been demonstrated that positive communication between parents and their children can help young people establish individual values and make healthy decisions. When parents are open and talk to their children with clarity, honesty and understanding, young people are more likely to develop confident, healthy attitudes, and a positive self-image.
Those conversations can be challenging we know, but they can make all the difference in a child’s life and development into adulthood. Stand Out Youth volunteer facilitators are available to further discuss and support you in thinking through and preparing for these conversations and can be a valuable resource to help answer your questions.
